History of Fashion: New Look to Now

HISTORY OF FASHION: New Look to Now

By June Marsh

Vivays Publishing, 288 pages

Writing about history of fashion (and pretty much any kind of history, for that matter) is like staging Romeo and Juliet. We all know that Christian Dior showed the New Look back in 1947 and it was groundbreaking. What’s more to it?

June Marsh, the author of History of Fashion, has been a fashion insider for more than forty years and has seen many events described in this book with her own eyes. Along with the facts, her book provides an emotional experience, enhanced with rare behind-the-scenes photography and quotes by famous fashion people. It is a history book – but reads like excellent fiction.

History of Fashion is jam-packed with information. Starting chronologically from the famous Dior show, it covers everything from Cristóbal Balenciaga’s first job in fashion (he was 11 years old) to bloggers rising to power and luxury boom in China. Although fashion is presented from different sides, the main focus of this book is still on designers, and you will find many lesser-known names that make the story even more colorful and interesting. It is structured by short topics, so you can easily start reading anywhere. And once you did, you just wouldn’t want to stop!

Needless to say, this book is a must have for everyone: it is gorgeous, entertaining, informative… But there is one more thing: if you have been following fashion for some time, you would probably like to know not only what fashion was, but also what it will become. The roots of the future are in the present and as you read this book, you might get inspired to create the tomorrow’s big thing. Maybe you are the next Mary Katrantzou or Natalie Massenet, who knows?
